The suit is actually one giant rubber bladder which inflates both outward and inward at the same time. The horizontal rubber straps attached to the suit serve a dual purpose. They provide attachment points for securing him to the table, and they also help the suit to inflate evenly. If the straps were not around his chest the suit would over inflate at his chest and under inflate around his legs.
