In 1980 Val was 2nd runner up in the International Mr Leather contest. In 2009 the Gay Adult Film Industry presented Roger Earl with the Life Time Achievement award at the GayVN awards show in S.F. One Bijou reviewer's take on this film: Ah, those were the "old guard" days of S/M, before the bywords "safe, sane, and consensual" came to define all play. This wild film, probably among the last actual porno films, is the perfect visual exploration of its title, Chain Reactions. Set in Los Angeles leather bar Chains, the scenes are connected by a dark, pulsing energy; they flow into one another, each subsequent sex act a little more frenzied, naughty and nasty. This building up of sexual excitement explains why the first third is a somewhat tame, if even a little lame. But, and this is a big but, Chain Reactions becomes absolutely incredible, with orgies, spankings, candle wax, slings, and even enemas more than making up for a slow beginning. This is the kind of porno that one would never get made these days. That's a damn shame.

Next, some butch blondes get freaky in a threesome involving rope, face fucking, and lots of groping. This sequence is marred by terrible sucking noises that have clearly been added in post-production. In fact, the sound design is a problem throughout the entire film. Lots of horrific 80's music, windstorm sound effects (why?), and even some gothic horror music threaten to suck the joy from the proceedings. Luckily it never quite does.

Even though I'm sure he is hamming it up a bit, this is one of the heaviest whipping sequences I have seen on video. There is one place on his side under his armpit where it looks like Rick actually drew . At this point, a subplot of sorts develops. It seems as if two store employees perhaps got horny and decided to come upstairs. The transfer was acceptable, but it seems as if they forgot some of the lessons that they learned in doing Terrible Trilogy, as they walked in front of the lights and even pointed the camera at them. It seems hard to believe they kept those sequences as this one was obviously shot with two cameras so they could have cut to the second one where Rick happened to walk in front. However, overall, it is worth watching if you are into whipping scenes. "Authentic S/M combined with a short story that produces what will obviously be a new trend from the ballsy and innovative Slave & Master video company. Leather Rick could have been one of the original storm troopers of the Third Reich. Or a cop from Detroit. He's merciless in slamming the young offender around. He grabs the young snot's arms, yanks them over his head, chains him to a convenient overhang, then rips his clothes off. All the while calling him all kinds of worthless asshole..Crime Does Pay brings Dave Nesor to the crest of his form as a new director, having moved from a nearly cinema verite style (Everything But the Kitchen Sink, The Pain Down Below) through experiments with sustained narrative line (The Terrible Trilogy) to this structured, if still highly avant garde mini drama. A Winter's Tail - Vol. 1 - (1984 Year)


What begins as a humorously detached winter excursion into the Bijou Theatre as it looked in the early 80s (note the triple XX somewhat cheesy Valley of the Dolls looking advertising signage, ah, those were the days) ends up being an ascent up a spiral staircase into Tartarus that includes a brutally exciting fisting scene which climaxes in bare feet, yes bare feet, inserted into bottomless maws. The overall transition in the film between the various components is abrupt and disconnected, and the fisting scenes sometimes end up as vague murky dark images, but the setting is historically interesting and may evoke nostalgia in some viewers. A clever beginning, with footage of winter driving (and a radio discussing Gary Hart, remember him?) and a member of the Skulls (Donut)'s voiceover making some comments about the improvements to the Bijou, once a "sleezy little pit." He seems upset that the "cockroach in the cage" is charging him eight dollars. (The price went up!) Only after he enters the play area, ascending the spiral staircase, does he lose his sarcastic attitude and become both excited and apprehensive. The Skulls are there, he says, and he is sure "something spectacular" will happen.
